FIELD TRIPS

NATURAL SCIENCES SCHOOL PROGRAMS

What better place is there to learn and connect than in a woodland, a prairie, or a wetland? Therein live some of the finest teachers to be found and at Seno, we have them in abundance.

Field Trip programs are science-based and conform to the Core Curriculum Standards as much as possible. We also believe in the essential nature of discovery, exploration, and relationship-building within the context of the natural world. These programs also are more in-depth.

Field Trip programs vary by season so there is always something to do here at the Seno Woodland Center to get your class engaged with nature and our natural resources. All Field Trip programs include a hike to explore the woods and/or prairies unless the weather makes that impossible. Dress for being outside and for the weather. Many programs also involve a “make-and-take.”
If you are spending the day with us, feel free to bring your lunch. We have a carry-in and carry-out policy. That means what you bring with you, leaves with you.

Our field trip fees are $7/student, with a minimum of $100 for groups smaller than 15 students.

We offer scholarships for students in financial need.

Our cancellation policy is as follows: If you wish to cancel your program we must receive notification of your intent to cancel 24 hours before the scheduled program time. Seno K/RLT Conservancy reserves the right to cancel/reschedule the program up to 24 hours before the scheduled program due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control such as sudden illness or injury.

ART IN NATURE

Ages 4 – 12
Nature is art! Join us on an adventure as we practice observation skills through outdoor art-making activities. Participants will create a reflective art project that connects them with their experiences and discoveries in their own neighborhood. Students will practice observation skills through outdoor art-making activities. We will explore through drawings by using natural mediums found in nature, finding nature’s patterns, and/or design mini environments for animals.

Wisconsin State Standards: Art is an essential part of a comprehensive education in Wisconsin. The 2019 Wisconsin Standards for Art and Design provides a set of academic standards for schools to consider using in developing their own curriculum. The overall focus of art and design as an art form is to build students’ skills and knowledge through multiple opportunities to explore and develop skills and knowledge through four artistic processes: Create, Present, Respond, and Connect.
Fundamental concepts of artistic techniques, critical thinking, and creative expression beginning in the elementary levels. Critical thinking, skill building, and expressing and communicating ideas, feelings, and concepts in greater depth at the secondary levels.

DOWN TO EARTH

Ages 7 – 12
Where does soil come from? Join us for this interactive program as we unearth the wonders of soil and who make their homes there. Students will participate in an inquiry-based program to uncover soil’s role as the foundation of all life. We will take a close look at decomposers and dig into a worm bin to learn about their important role in nature’s cycle.

  • 3-LS1-1. From molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes – Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles, but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.

  • 5-LS2-1. Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics – Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.

LAND OF FIRE & ICE

Next Generation Science Standards Crosscutting Concepts Statements Grades 6-8:

  • Explanations of stability and change in natural or designed systems can be constructed by examining the changes over time and forces at different scales.

  • Small changes in one part of a system might cause large changes in another part.

  • Stability might be disturbed either by sudden events or gradual changes that accumulate over time.
